May 6, 2009 to June 1, 2009 During the 1960's, Lynn Margulis, a biologist and university professor at the University of Massachusetts and the NASA scientist, Dr. James Lovelock, developed a new ecological hypothesis; they stated that living and non-living parts of the earth are a complex interacting system that can be thought of as a single organism. They referred to the earth as Gaia - the Greek goddess of creation. Gaia is everything created, including us. As artists we are driven to re-create and discover ourselves through the process of artmaking, thereby revealing our creative nature - our Gaia nature. Inspired by the mystery inherent in the natural world, we expect to discover and celebrate Gaia through our imagery, materials, and process. December 3, 2008 to December 28, 2008 This show is to be an extension of discovery and balance. "Taste" is the chosen name for the show to describe the items, which are the main characters, and the choices we make viewing them. When it comes to taste, each of us want our acquisitions to uniquely define us. Yet we live in the culture of other's definitions of good taste that can circumvent ours. Location: The Galleries Seasons Suite ~ Ona Alisauskas
October 28, 2008 to November 23, 2008 "Seasons Suite" is an exhibition of watercolours by Ona Alisauskas on display in the Meaford Hall Galleries from October 28 to November 23, 2008. The exhibition concentrates on differing views of Blue Mountain and the shoreline of Georgian Bay near Ona's home in Craigleith. Some paintings continue the water theme Alisauskas has been exploring for several years. Water as a subject is an artists dream: its temperament is ever changing. It also can be an artists nightmare because water is invisible. Painting water is like painting liquid glass. I paint everything that is reflected in it, everything seen through it, and light diffracted off it. Waters subtleties are mesmerizing and the technical challenge of painting it can be daunting. Nonetheless I am compelled to recreate it, not because it is easy, but because it is hard. says Alisauskas. Location: The Galleries 'Double Exposure' Art Show & Sale

July 26, 2008 to August 22, 2008 Coinciding with the centenary celebrations of Meaford Hall, the Tom Thomson Art Gallery is presenting an exhibition called 1908: Selections from the Tom Thomson Art Gallery Collection that includes paintings illustrating trends in Canadian art around the beginning of the twentieth century. The show is on view in the North Room at Meaford Hall from July 27 to August 25, 2008. The period between 1880 and 1915 has been referred to as The French Period in Canadian art. Paris, France, was then the centre of influence. Most young Canadian artists who were serious about pursuing a life as an artist travelled to France to study or to experience the influences of Paris, first hand. Despite the radical changes in painting asserted by French post-Impressionists like Gaughin, Matisse and Van Gogh in the years just prior to the turn of the 20th century, the Canadian public of 1908 were still interested in traditional representations of landscape, the figure, still lives and genre scenes in painting. The art world in English Canada was still closely aligned with Britain and the sentiments of the Victorian age. This exhibition includes paintings by such prominent Canadian artists as J.W. Beatty, J. W. Morrice, Frederick Verner, Georges Chavignaud, Henry Harold Vickers and George Thomson. Established in 1967, the Tom Thomson Art Gallery is a regional art centre and national cultural attraction dedicated to the innovative spirit of landscape artist and Canadian icon, Tom Thomson. Located in downtown Owen Sound, the Gallery celebrates excellence in the visual arts through exhibitions of historical and contemporary art, education programs promoting life-long learning, and the enrichment and interpretation of its significant permanent collection. Meaford Hall is located at 1-12 Nelson Street East in the heart of downtown Meaford, a stones throw from Georgian Bay and adjacent to all amenities in a region well-known for its year-round attractions. The Gallery at Meaford Hall is open Thursday to Saturday 1 pm to 4:30 pm, Sunday 10 am to 2 pm. For further information call 519.538.0463.
