August 4, 2010 SORRY...THIS SHOW IS SOLD OUT When Ashley MacIsaac burst on the worldwide scene with 1995's Hi, How Are You Today? (A&M) he scored the kind of coup instrumental artists often dream of. Going triple-platinum in Canada and breaking down radio barriers with the Gaelic single "Sleepy Maggie," Ashley became an immediate pop icon, rebellious and exuberant, resplendent in kilts, army boots and combat pants. Copping from rockers' sensibilities, Ashley made an aesthetic of it onstage, effortlessly blending his Celtic heritage with contemporary elements such as punk, electronica, hip-hop and grunge. Audiences who may have felt alienated by Ashley's disregard of convention were instantly won over by his dazzling displays of grit, passion and authority. Recalls Ashley at the time, "My father once told me, "If you want to play the fiddle, get mad at it or don't play it at all."" Pat Robitaille opens for Ashley. For an artist at the start of a career, Pat Robitaille's hard-earned years of songwriting and touring already shine through with a comfortable attitude on and off stage. This isn't a musician by trade, this is someone who makes music because they have to. He's born and bred in Windsor, Ontario, the city of roses and the automotive capitol of Canada. His neighbours across the river in Detroit, Michigan paved the way for what is rock and soul music today. Pat's brand of music doesn't quite showcase the sound of Motown Detroit, but it's got the soul and spirit to measure up. http://www.myspace.com/patrobitaille Presented by Meaford Hall Tickets $38 Location: The Opera House ELVIS RETURNS with Anthony Von

October 22, 2009 For filmmaker Rob Stewart, exploring sharks began as an underwater adventure. What it turned into was a beautiful and dangerous life journey into the balance of life on earth. Driven by passion fed from a lifelong fascination with sharks, Stewart debunks historical stereotypes and media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters and reveals the reality of sharks as pillars in the evolution of the seas. Filmed in visually stunning, high definition video, Sharkwater takes you into the most shark rich waters of the world, exposing the exploitation and corruption surrounding the world's shark populations in the marine reserves of Cocos Island, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. Stewart's remarkable journey of courage and determination changes from a mission to save the world's sharks, into a fight for his life, and that of humankind. September 24, 2009 In talking about his music, singer-songwriter Justin Hines says, "Honestly, I don't remember wanting to do anything else, period." That sense of it being something as essential as breathing emanates from every track on his soul-searching debut album, Sides. Listening to it is an experience akin to that mystical phenomenon of everyday life when you meet someone new but, somehow, feel as if you've known them forever. And, while there's a familiarity, a timelessness to Justin's music, it's also marked by a lean, contemporary sound and distinctly postmodern sensibility as direct and authentic as the ideas and emotions the Toronto native expresses with his literate song craft. August 20, 2009 In 1985, while she was a student at the National Theatre School in Montreal, Brooke Johnson became friends with Pierre Elliott Trudeau. It had been a year and a half since he'd stepped down as Prime Minister, and now he was walking to work, putting cereal bowls on cartoon placemats, washing dishes and making peanut-butter on toast. He was no longer doing pirouettes behind the Queen but sometimes he was hanging around with Brooke, sliding down ice-covered staircases on Mount Royal. Through reminiscences, journal entries and correspondence, Brooke brings to life the story of a remarkable friendship. This private insight into the man and the times as seen through the eyes of a passionate artist is not to be missed. At once vital and charming; poignant and very funny, Trudeau Stories is about friendship and loss...and about who the heck we think we are. August 8, 2009 Rock singer 'Pink' sits in his hotel room in Los Angeles, burnt out from the music business and only able to perform on stage with the help of drugs. Based on the 1979 double album 'The Wall' by Pink Floyd, the film begins in Pink's youth where he is crushed by the love of his mother. Several years later he is punished by the teachers in school because he is starting to write poems. Slowly he begins to build a wall around himself to be protected from the world outside. The film shows all this in massive and epic pictures until the very end where he tears down the wall and breaks free. The life of the fictional rock star 'Pink' is the subject of the visually evocative cult film based upon the music and visions of the group Pink Floyd as portrayed in the album of the same title. Relationships, drug abuse, sex, childhood, WWII and fascism combine in a disturbing mix of episodic live action and lyrical animation drawn by British caricaturist Gerald Scarfe. He is a long way from the man for whom singing was a hobby less than ten years ago. John was discovered quite by chance, when working as a circulation sales representative for the Toronto Sun, he belted out an impromptu rendition of "Danny Boy" at a company party. "I grew up singing, but I thought everybody grew up singing. My dad and mom introduced us to music early on, and all of the McDermott kids could unleash a verse or two of 'Scotland the Brave' or 'Green Isle of Erin' on command. February 19, 2009 The Band's Visit, which screened to popular acclaim at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival®, is an inspiring story of cross-cultural rapprochement and reconciliation set in the most unlikely of locales. In director Eran Kolirin's debut feature, a small, uniformed Egyptian police band becomes lost in rural Israel on their way to performing at a concert. They unexpectedly encounter not only tensions and friendships with the townspeople who take them in for the night, but valuable lessons as well. Invited to perform at the opening of an Israeli cultural centre, the immaculately pressed members of the Alexandria Ceremonial Police Band arrive at the airport only to find that their hosts are nowhere in sight. Their Plan B is to take a bus, but they accidentally head in the wrong direction, led by conductor Tewfiq (Sasson Gabai). Stranded in a tiny Israeli desert town, they reluctantly decide to stay the night until the next bus arrives in the morning. Tewfiq and the fetching Haled (Saleh Bakri) stay with the self-assured and witty café proprietress, Dina (Ronit Elkabetz), whose casual sensuality can't help but challenge the men's ideas about womanhood. Through the connections they forge, the band members and the villagers find their cultural assumptions shaken - with one especially memorable scene taking place in a roller disco. The Band's Visit is good-natured and warm while avoiding sentimentality. Subtitled. Ratings: ON PG Showtime 4pm & 7pm Tickets $10 Buy any 6 films in the series for $50! August 7, 2007 The Georgian Theatre Festival presents Here on the Flight Path, a comedy by Norm Foster. Over a period of some three years the plot traces his various degrees of friendship with three women who inhabit the next-door apartment and adjacent balcony. John's intentions are obvious with each of the ladies, and Foster the playwright takes great delight in showing how John tries to find the right approach to achieve his goal, but somehow manages to fumble the ball almost every time -- and I did say almost. Flight path is a hilarious look at a screwed-up nerd's relationships with three attractive women. For John Cummings, living on the edge of Toronto's Pearson Airport, the coming and going of jet planes is simply a metaphor for the way life flies by. When you don't grab tomorrow by the tail, you're left on the edge of the runway, on the outskirts of life. Tickets are $30 from the Meaford Hall Box Office Location: Meaford Hall The Golden Violin
